Conclusion: the VP8 spec is a little weaker than H.264; the current implementation falls short of what it could be; there are still patent concerns, but also plenty of hope for web>m.

(Yesterday Google released the VP8 codec they acquired with On2, provided patches for ffmpeg, Firefox, and Chrome, and is in the process of rebuilding YouTube so every video will be available in this codec. That could let us use YouTube and friends cleanly without a Flash plugin soon.)
